Community Board Members Wanted (ongoing)

Community Members Wanted for Board of Directors of

Dumfries and Galloway Small Communities Housing Trust

Are you interested in what happens in your local community?  Do you have an interest in housing and regeneration?  Could you spare a few hours every few weeks to help inform the future of housing in your area and in communities across Dumfries and Galloway?

Dumfries and Galloway Small Communities Housing Trust (DGSCHT) is a charitable company currently working with rural communities across Dumfries and Galloway to address local housing needs as part of wider rural regeneration.   The Trust was established in 2006 in response to local concern about the shortage of affordable housing in rural Dumfries and Galloway and the fact that many people on local incomes have been unable to afford suitable housing in their own communities.  This, in turn, can have a detrimental impact on family and community life as well as on the local economy.   By addressing housing issues, the Trust intends to make a contribution to wider issues such as community cohesion, economic regeneration, and the reduction of fuel poverty to ensure sustainable rural future.

The Trust’s operational philosophy is based on working closely in, with and for the communities it serves to help provide solutions to housing problems.  To achieve this it works with partner organisations such as housing associations, landowners, private developers, Dumfries and Galloway Council and Scottish Government.  Where conventional methods of providing housing are unsuitable or unavailable, the Trust seeks innovative ways of providing affordable housing that is appropriate to local circumstances.   This may include:

  • Affordable community-led housing provided by community organisations or in partnership with the private sector or other affordable housing providers.
  • Reduced price houses in partnership with private developers.
  • Self-build plots, with the possibility reduced price plots.

To complement the existing Board, the Trust is currently looking for two new or three new Directors with a community focus and background to join the Board of the Company.   We are particularly interested in individuals with experience of community development or working with community organisations.  The Board meets on average six times a year (every eight weeks, usually in Crocketford / Castle Douglas).   With the launch of the Rural Housing Fund and Community Land Fund in Scotland, this is a particularly exciting time to join the Board.

This is an unpaid position, although reasonable travel expenses can be covered.  If you would be interested in getting involved or would like more information, please call Mike Staples, Chief Executive, on 01848 332516, or email , or send a copy of your CV with a covering letter outlining why you would like to get involved to DGSCHT, 114 Drumlanrig Street, Thornhill, DG3 5LS.
